Belgium has arrested the Somali pirate king Mohamed Abdi Hassan alias Afweyne, Somali for “Big Mouth”. He is considered among others responsible for the hijacking of the Belgian stone dumping vessel Pompei in 2009.
Pirate King Afweyne arrived with the flight from Nairobi, Kenya at the Zaventem airport in Brussels. He was said to be totally surprised when the police handcuffed him. Reasons why he came to Belgium is unclear.
The UN has long been complaining about the fact why Afweyne have not been charged for so long. The ‘pirate king’ has many connections with those in power in his country. Along with him was also arrested a high Somali official who accompanied him to Belgium.
Afweyne was transferred to Bruges and was held there by the investigating judge. He will be prosecuted for piracy. The Belgian court is certain that he is the man who was in charge of the pirates who hostaged the crew of the Pompei vessel in 2009 .
According to the report of the United Nations (UN), Afweyne and his son Abdikadir are considered the most notorious and powerful pirates who have terrorized the Somalian coast in recent years. Together with his band of pirates he named as the “Somali Marines”, Afweyne have earned millions of euros and dollars since 2005 for hijacking ships for ransom. Afweyne has been tagged as a stinking rich-pirate millionaire.
