FLASH REPORT: Brussels, Belgium has canceled New Year’s Eve festivities and fireworks display because of the terror threat. Alert level 3 is up.
The decision was taken by Mayor Yvan Mayeur after consultation with Interior Minister Jan Jambon. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said the decision had been taken based on information received from Belgian intelligence.
The fireworks display in the center of the city was expected to attract 50,000 people. Belgians and tourists were asked to celebrate New Year’s eve indoors. Fireworks displays in other Belgian towns and cities will go ahead as planned.
